Big releases for Deepavali weekend in south India-2016

Deepavali is just around the corner and the box office is gearing up for a cracker of a weekend. Here's what south Indian fans can expect this Friday.
Tamil
Among the four Southern industries, Deepavali is probably the biggest for Kollywood. Tamil Nadu sees some of its most eagerly awaited releases around this time and 2016 is no exception. "Kaashmora" and "Kodi", two films that have generated high expectations, will clash on Friday for the top spot.
While "Kaashmora" is a fantasy film with Karthi, Nayantara and Sri Divya in the lead, "Kodi" is a political thriller starring Dhanush, Trisha and Anupama Parameswaran. Interestingly, Karthi and Dhanush will both be playing multiple roles in their respective films.
With "Baahubali", the bar for Indian fantasy films has been set really high. The audience is reluctant to forgive amateurish graphics and expects to see quality work on the big screen. The trailer for "Kaashmora" looks promising, but much depends on whether the storytelling will hold up.
Dhanush has shown us what he can do when placed in a good script, however microcosmic its span. "Aadukalam", for instance. "Kodi" has the potential to wow the audience if it makes for intelligent cinema. And Trisha is said to be playing a role with negative shades in the film – something not too many heroines have ventured into doing.
Nadhiya's "Thiraiku Varadha Kadhai", a unique film with only female actors, is also releasing this Friday. A horror drama, the film supposedly features a lesbian romance. Tamil cinema has so far mangled LGBTQ subjects thoroughly and has almost never represented a non-heterosexual relationship with respect. Will "Thiraiku Varadha Kadhai" change that?
"Kadalai", a comedy starring Ma Ka Pa Anand and Aishwarya Rajesh (of "Kaaka Muttai” fame) is making a fairly quiet arrival too. The film has an "agricultural" theme. There isn't much buzz around it but many of these smaller films become sleeper hits because of word of mouth as long as the content is good.
Telugu
"Kodi" is releasing as "Dharma Yogi" in Telugu. "Kaashmora" is releasing under the same title. Tamil films dubbed in the language have generally done well in both Telugu states.
The Telugu industry is fond of period dramas and fantasies. Films like "Maghadheera", "Rudhramadevi", and of course, "Baahubali" have come out of its stable. "Kaashmora" might catch more attention from the audiences there than will "Dharma Yogi".
"Mister 420" starring Varun Sandesh and Priyanka Bharadwaja is also hitting the screens this weekend. Though the film does not have a big star cast, its music has got favourable reviews. "Mister 420" appears to be a typical masala flick with romance, action sequences and pretty songs.
Kannada
In Karnataka, it's Real Star Upendra and Kiccha Sudeep taking on Rocking Star Yash. For both films, the opening weekend is an opportunity for big collections as Deepavali is being followed by Rajyotsava Day, giving cinema goers in the state a long weekend to hit the theatres.
"Mukunda Murari", a satire featuring Upendra and Kiccha Sudeep, is a highly anticipated film although it's a remake. The Hindi "Oh My God" (which was based on a Gujarati play and an Australian film) with Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar did surprisingly well, even as it questioned godmen and religious practices.
Upendra will be playing the role of an atheist, while Sudeep will play the cool and contemporary Lord Krishna.
"Santhu Straight Forward" with Yash and Radhika Pandit, the hit pair from "Moggina Manasu" is another Kannada Deepavali release. Shaam, who began his career in Tamil films and now does Kannada films too, is also part of the cast. "Santhu Straight Forward" is an action flick.
Sharan, who is known for his comedy films, is appearing in the lead role in "Nataraja Service". Mayuri Kyatari is the heroine. Director Pawan Wadeyar's debut film "Govindaya Namaha", also a comedy, was a superhit despite receiving mixed responses from critics.
Although it is celebrated, Deepavali is not that big a festival in Kerala. There are no Malayalam releases this weekend. But Tamil films are popular among audiences there and with "Kaashmora" and "Kodi" releasing in the state, cinema lovers still have something to look forward to.

Nokia’s new phones will be made in India

The world's largest contract manufacturer of phones, Foxconn Technology Group is planning to expand its operations locally next year. It has already made $600 million investments in India. Soon after Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative was successful, many phonemakers from China started making phones in India throughFoxconn

"Since last year, we have restarted operations and right now we're in finalizing 2017 plan, there will be more expansion,” Foxconn's head of India operations Josh Foulger told The Economic Times. He added that Nokia, which is preparing for its come back, will also be made by Foxconn. The company along with HMD Global had bought Nokia's brand license and feature phones business from Microsoft earlier this year.

Asked by the ET if Apple plans to commence manufacturing of iPhone in India in partnership with Foxconn, Foulger said that the Cupertino-based company will make a decision based on global supply chain. "Companies like Apple will have to take a diligent view on the market in India.”
Foxconn is all excited about Indian government's phased manufacturing program under the Make in India initiative. The initiative is progressing in a systematic manner in incentivizing manufacturing in India, and is going to make India attractive for manufacturers, Foulger said.

"In semiconductor, the industry is looking at assembly, test, mark, and pack (ATMP) --excluding the fabs--including 21 component categories that makes it attractive for companies like Foxconn and other suppliers to support this ecosystem,” Foulger told the ET.

"India, from a manufacturing standpoint, has logistic advantage, not just for India but for Middle East and Africa. The ASP of products is very similar. If you look at making India a manufacturing destination for 800 million phones, it looks very attractive,' he further said. "India cost is competitive. It takes time but if managed well, it can bring results.”

Calais Jungle: France to shut migrant camp 'by nightfall'

Calais, France (CNN)French officials have said they will officially close the migrant camp known as "The Jungle" by nightfall Wednesday and will begin bulldozing the settlement.
French riot police officers hold back migrants Monday as an operation began to clear the camp.
France on Monday began the process of registering thousands of migrants living at the camp after vowing for months to shut it down. By Wednesday morning, more than 4,400 migrants had been processed and bused out of Calais to other regions of the country.
"It really is now the end of the Jungle. We will finish at the time needed, but no matter what, tonight the Calais Jungle will shut down," Calais prefect Fabienne Buccio told reporters.
Migrants torched temporary shelters at The Jungle on Wednesday, authorities said.
"So it shows that we have arrived at the goal, and that our mission, which was to give shelter to the immigrants of the camp, is complete. We are proud, and it is an exceptional moment that we have experienced."
Calais prefecture officials said all of the camp's migrants will have been resettled by the end of Wednesday. But a CNN team at the camp said hundreds of migrants were still there by late afternoon, and that many were refusing to register and be moved to other cities.

Some had cleared out of the camp for a few hours as fires tore through the settlement's center, from dozens of tents, huts and shipping-container shelters torched by migrants.
Four Afghans were arrested in connection with the fires, Buccio said.

Donald Trump speaks Hindi in Indian American campaign ad

In a thick American accent, the Republican tries to woo Hindus by adopting Narendra Modi’s winning message: ‘This time Trump government’
Donald Trump gives his message to Indian American voters in a campaign ad. The slogan borrows one used by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to win power.

Donald Trump may have insulted Mexicans, Muslims and women but to woo Indian American voters he’s even dabbling in Hindi for Diwali.
The bombastic New York businessman is seen uttering “Ab Ki Baar Trump Sarkaar” – adapting Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 vote-winning catchphrase as his own – in a presidential campaign ad released on Thursday.
“This time Trump government,” translates the ad on the screen.
Trump may speak in a thick US accent, but the 30-second ad is the Republican nominee’s latest attempt to win votes among Indian Americans ahead of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights which falls on the weekend.
The video opens with the message “Happy Diwali” and borrows from footage of Trump speaking at a Hindu gathering in New Jersey this month, lighting an oil lamp and promising close US-Indian relations.
“The Indian and Hindu community will have a true friend in the White House,” he says in the ad. “We love the Hindus, we love India,” he adds, saying that he looks forward to working with Modi.
The candidate’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump visited a Hindu temple this week in Virginia, the home state of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine which is expected to vote blue on 8 November.
Trump trails 5.4 points in the latest poll average compiled by tracker RealClearPolitics in a national race against Clinton and two outsiders – pointing to a likely electoral college victory for the Democrat.
There are an estimated four million Indian Americans living in the United States according to 2015 census figures. They are among the most educated ethnic groups and generally well off, according to the Pew Research Center.
Only about half are Hindu and 65% are Democrat, or Democrat-leaning, the think tank found in a 2014 report.
